Electricity generation from renewable energies is volatile: when there is a lot of sun and wind, there are often surpluses, but when it is calm and dark, there is a lack of electricity. These fluctuations put an enormous strain on our electricity grid. Excess electricity already has to be curtailed, which costs billions - a situation that we can no longer afford. According to the Federal Network Agency, curtailment costs amounted to 4.2 billion euros per year.
